The Monthly meeting is held on the first Friday of each month in the Parish Hall from 2.00-4.00pm. (Except August) Information about the Speakers can be found in the list below.
Members arrive from 1.30pm when coffee etc is available and are encouraged to catch up on the various group tables to check on current details and forthcoming events - and to sign up to take part.
Visitors are very welcome to attend for a maximum of twice; we ask for a voluntary contribution of £3 each time. Should they then decide to become a u3a member this will be deducted from their first yearly subscription payment of £25.
Details about individual group meetings can be found on the relevant group pages.
Through the auspices of the Regional u3a, in early July three of our members were part of a group of 24 from other Northumbria u3as who enjoyed an event hosted by the Department of Anthropology at Durham University. The first session covered two talks. One about work at Lindisfarne raising interesting chronology of the monastery and the other covering work on a mediaeval settlement at Yeavering, a site occupied since the neolithic era.
Later, in two shorter sessions, a talk on the purpose and principles of conservation, and a visit to the bio archaeology lab took place.
Members thoroughly enjoyed this visit and learned such a lot. Where else but at the u3a are there these opportunities?

Star Gazing In Weardale
Members of our Science, Technology and Industry Group had the most exciting evening recently when we travelled to Weardale and, courtesy of the Weardale Railway, were treated to atypically perfect conditions to view the star strewn sky.
Members of the Bishop Auckland Astronomical Society shared their knowledge - and telescopes - to explain the various planets, stars and constellations we could see and how ever-more powerful telescopes had widened the scientific knowledge of the skies. We also marvelled at how busy the skies are with commercial, private and military aircraft as well as the escalating number of satellites perpetually crossing above us.
